Theatre Programs That Don't Require a Prescreen (2026)
If you’ve been researching college theatre programs, you’ve probably heard the term “prescreen.” It’s a recorded video audition that programs use to filter applicants before inviting them for a live audition. For many students, prescreens add stress, cost, and uncertainty to an already intense process.
But not every program requires one. Dozens of excellent BFA programs skip the prescreen entirely and go straight to a live or virtual audition. Some don’t require an audition at all.
We reviewed the programs in our database to put this list together. It’s not a ranking. It’s a reference. Every school links to its full StageReady profile where you can see audition requirements, deadlines, and program details.

How to Use This List
No prescreen doesn’t mean no audition. Most BFA programs on this list still require a live or virtual audition. They just don’t use a prescreen video to filter applicants beforehand. This means:
- Everyone who applies gets an audition slot. You’re not cut before you even get in the room.
- You save money on prescreen recordings. Professional prescreen videos can cost $200-500+ to produce.
- You may still face high competition. Programs like Juilliard and Wright State are among the most competitive in the country despite having no prescreen.
