Audition Requirements

Songs

MTCP Song Option A

Two Contrasting Songs

One song written before 1970; musical theatre, Golden Age, pop, folk, rock, soul, country, and other styles are accepted

One song written after 1970 in a style that contrasts with the first selection

Monologues

MTCP Monologue Option A

One Monologue

Select a monologue from a published play or one written by a professional writer whose plays have been produced

Dance

MTCP Dance Option A

Submit your best version of choreographed dancing or moving

Include at least one turn, one jump, and one kick, or suitable rotation, elevation, and extension that work for your body

Ballet

MTCP Ballet Option B

Optional

Ballet content is optional

Suggested material includes plié in first, second, and fifth positions; tendu en croix; grand battement en croix; pirouette en dehors to both sides; and one or more grand jeté, leap, or saut de chat across the floor

Application Logistics

Submit audition materials through NMU Acceptd when the portal opens

Applicants attending a listed regional event that uses Acceptd or Submittable do not need a duplicate NMU submission

Important Notes

NMU states the next theatre and dance application cycle opens October 1, 2027

Submit by March 1 for departmental scholarship consideration

Scholarship offers are sent by April 1

What's The Process

Audition Process

Follow Musical Theatre Common Prescreen Criteria Song Option A, Monologue Option A, Dance Option A, and Ballet Option B for NMU's audition package

Submit through Acceptd if you cannot attend an in-person regional or national audition event

A short Zoom interview with faculty may be required after review of the audition

Be prepared to discuss your interest in NMU's BFA Musical Theatre program and your past experience

Scholarship Info

Scholarship Consideration

The program audition also serves as the departmental scholarship audition

Submit by March 1 for departmental scholarship consideration

Scholarship offers are sent no later than April 1

Incoming first-year students must accept scholarship offers by May 1
