Audition Requirements

Songs

MTCP Song Option C

Two Contrasting Songs

Option A

One song written before 1970 (musical theater, Golden Age, pop, hip-hop)

One contrasting song written after 1970 (musical theatre, Golden Age, pop, hip-hop, folk, rock, rap, soul, country, punk, etc.)

Option B

One musical theater song from any time period

One contrasting song of your choice from any time period in any style (musical theatre, pop, hip-hop, folk, rock, rap, soul, country, punk, etc.)

In-Person Audition

Accompanist provided at University of Utah campus

Bring sheet music clearly marked with start/end points, in correct key, hole-punched in a three-ring binder or iPad

No loose-leaf pages

Other Locations/Virtual

Bring backing track and speaker

Tips

Contrast can include fast vs slow tempo, sustained melodic vs speech-like singing, dramatic vs comedic, belt vs head/falsetto mix

Apps like Harmony Helper can generate piano tracks from sheet music photos

Monologues

MTCP Monologue Option A

One Monologue

One monologue from a published play or written by a professional writer (whose plays have been produced)

Material Selection

Choose monologues that are age-appropriate (within 5-10 years of actual age) and authentic to your culture, background, and lived experience

Active monologues work best — taking place in real time, focused on what you want, in direct communication with an imaginary scene partner

What to Avoid

Avoid monologues that rely on extreme emotions — hard to believably justify in a short piece

Avoid story/remembrance monologues — active pieces are more successful in auditions

Dance

MTCP Dance Option B

Dance Video — Required

Submit before in-person audition — cannot receive offer without it

Any dance discipline: jazz, ballet, tap, modern, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, or styles beyond American/Euro-western

Can be self-choreographed but must be a solo video of you

Can include footage from a show, competition, or performance as long as you are clearly featured alone

Use steps and movement you are familiar with and can execute well

Frame: full body visible (top of head to floor)
