Audition Requirements

Songs

Video Auditions

Two full songs required

One musical theatre song selection prior to 1970

One song written during or after 1970 (can be from any time period or era of the musical theatre repertoire, or another genre entirely such as rock, pop, gospel, etc.)

In-Person Auditions

Two full songs required; student chooses which song to perform first

One musical theatre song selection written prior to 1970

One song written during or after 1970 (can be from any time period or era of the musical theatre repertoire, or another genre entirely such as rock, pop, gospel, etc.)

If faculty wish to hear more, they will ask to hear a cut or all of the second song

Students must bring their own sheet music

Music should be double-sided on 8.5" x 11" paper, 3-hole punched and placed in a 3-ring binder for the accompanist

No bound books or loose-leaf paper music permitted

Live accompanist provided; no pre-recorded tracks permitted unless specifically requested by adjudicating faculty prior to audition day

Faculty will ask to hear the monologue if they wish to hear more after the first song

Dance

No dance audition is required in the application process

Should admitted students commit to the program, there will be a dance placement call held at the start of the school year to place students in a suitable level of dance courses

Audition season runs October through March

On-campus and virtual audition days: November 21, 2026; January 23, 2027 (virtual); February 13, 2027; March 6, 2027

Off-campus locations: Pittsburgh Unified Auditions (October 16-18, 2026, virtual), DC Unified Auditions (October 23-24, 2026, virtual), CAP United (November 14, 2026, St. Louis, MO), MARCAS (November 13-14, 2026, Glassboro, NJ), Colorado Thespian Conference (December 10-12, 2026, Denver, CO), Virginia Thespian Festival (January 9-11, 2027, virtual), Chicago Unified Auditions (February 1-3, 2027, Chicago, IL), Los Angeles Unified Auditions (February 6, 2027, Anaheim, CA)

Audition Expectations

In-person auditions are scheduled in 10-minute slots

Students perform their chosen first song first

Faculty may ask to hear a cut or all of the second song and the monologue

Students may receive adjustments so faculty can assess training and potential

Resumes are not permitted in the audition room; headshots are accepted but not required
