No audition is required for the initial application. This is an internal program gate students complete after enrolling at the university.Gateway source

Monologues

Prepare two contrasting monologues from established scripts

Keep the total combined time to 3 minutes

Choose selections that show your range of acting ability

Evaluation

Faculty adjudicators score clarity of interpretation, vulnerability and immediacy, body, voice, and professional attitude

Immediacy means using your imagination to pursue the character's objectives within the circumstances of the play

Vulnerability means responding genuinely to the character's needs, obstacles, and relationships

Good to Know

Eligibility

Internal admission program - students must enroll at BYU before auditioning for BFA Acting

Incoming students or students under 30 earned BYU credit hours can declare Pre-Acting Major through MyMAP

Students with 30 to 59.5 earned BYU credit hours must meet with an academic advisor before declaring; students over 60 earned BYU credit hours cannot declare Pre-Acting Major

Admission Pathway

Take Acting 1 (TMA 128) and pass the preliminary audition

Take Acting 2 (TMA 228) and pass the acceptance audition

If accepted, begin the BFA curriculum

Program Requirements

Admitted students must meet progressively higher proficiency expectations each semester

Probation follows an unmet proficiency expectation; dismissal may follow three program probations

Transfer Pathway

Students first enroll at BYU, declare Pre-Acting when eligible, and then pass the preliminary and acceptance auditions after Acting 1 and Acting 2. Transfers need early advisement because students over 60 earned BYU credit hours cannot declare the Pre-Acting Major.

Audition Expectations

Preliminary and acceptance auditions held at end of every Fall and Winter semester

Two contrasting monologues, three minutes combined, from established scripts

Rated by 3 faculty adjudicators on: clarity of interpretation, vulnerability/immediacy, body, voice, and professional attitude

Must score 4 or above (out of 5) averaged across all areas

Tma Student Scholarships

TMA Student Scholarships for 2027 are due September 30, 2026; the application opens in late August

TMA Emergency Scholarships accept applications continuously

Eligibility

TMA majors and minors, including Acting pre-majors, may apply

Awards are applied directly to the student financial account

BFA Acting Incoming Student Scholarship

The department publishes a February 28 deadline; admitted students should email BFA_Specialist@byu.edu for current-cycle instructions
