Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Songs

Requirements

•One (1) Song

•16 bars of a song performed without accompaniment

•The audition song must come from published musical

•Pitch pipe (or a pitch pipe app) is allowed

Monologues

Requirements

•Three (3) Monologues

•Each monologue should stand on its own

•Pieces must be from published plays

•One (1) classical monologue, preferably Shakespeare or one of his contemporaries

•Two (2) contemporary monologues, 20th century or beyond

•No monologues or speeches from movies or generic monologue books

•Please avoid accents and dialects other than your own or of your heritage

•Applicants are expected to have read the entire play and understand the context and circumstances from which the character is speaking

•A photo that looks like you; selfies are acceptable

Artistic Statement

•Two-page statement expressing your interests, goals, and other information providing insight into your work

Application Logistics

•BFA application for the School of Drama closed for 2026-27; deadline was January 15, 2026

•Required documents must be uploaded at least two weeks prior to scheduled audition

•Application fee: $95 (domestic) / $130 (international)

•Fee waivers available via SAT, ACT, or NACAC Fee Waiver Request

•If applying to two UNCSA art schools, a second application and fee are required

What's The Process

Audition Process

•Scheduling begins in November on a first come, first serve basis

•Information sessions: 9-10:30 a.m. (morning auditions) or 2-3:30 p.m. (afternoon auditions)

•Virtual audition links provided 48 hours in advance

Audition Expectations

•Taped/pre-recorded auditions are not accepted; all auditions are live

•The monologues and song must not exceed a duration total of six (6) minutes

•Be prepared for a short interview following the audition

•On the day of audition, applicants attend a faculty-hosted Information Session about the School of Drama (guardians welcome)

•Applicants are asked to bring a headshot and resume if available

Decisions

•Released in early March after all candidates have been reviewed

Scholarship Info

•Kenan Excellence Scholarship — full tuition, required fees, room and board for up to five incoming students across all UNCSA arts schools (renewable for four years, nominated by deans)

•Joe Mantello Endowed Scholarship for Drama

•Additional talent-based and need-based scholarships awarded through the audition process
