Audition Requirements

Monologues

Requirements

One Contemporary Monologue from a published play

1-2 minutes in length (timed from first word, cut off at 2 minutes)

Character should be talking to another person present in the room

Character should want something important from that other person

Must read the entire play from which monologue is taken

Age-appropriate role (avoid characters more than 13 years from your age)

Choose material you understand, enjoy, and that touches something meaningful in you

Stand-up comedy routines

Film material or imitations of film actors

Small children characters

Characters with serious mental deficiencies

Characters under influence of mind-altering substances

Application Logistics

Early Action deadline November 1 required for university merit scholarship consideration

Eligibility

Must be accepted to Towson University before signing up to audition

Students not initially invited may pursue other Theatre Arts degrees and re-audition in first year

Must audition for BFA Acting separately

Minimum 3 years (6 semesters) to complete, even with all Core credits transferred

Transfer students wishing to waive core requirements must meet with department chairperson

Transfer Pathway

Towson University requires transfer students pursuing the BFA in Acting to present a placement audition for the faculty and submit transcripts for evaluation. Auditions take place between October and March. Students prepare a one- to two-minute monologue. As a Maryland public university at roughly $17,000 average net price, Towson is an affordable transfer option near the Baltimore and D.C. theatre scenes.

What's The Process

Audition Process

Auditions take place between October and March each year

Audition dates for the incoming class of 2027 will be announced in the fall

Current Towson students should plan to audition in December 2026

Focuses on understanding of theatre as art form, books and influences, community involvement, curiosities and passions

May be asked to discuss other interests, recent plays/movies seen, or articulate current goals

Audition Expectations

One contemporary monologue (1-2 min) plus interview

Must attend for entirety of scheduled slot

Location: Center for the Arts, CA 3038

Decisions

Screening decisions made within 2-3 weeks of final audition date

Scholarship Info

Scholarships

Nine endowed scholarships are available, including the Charles S. Dutton, John Glover, and Steve Yeager awards

Awards range from $200 to over $3,000 per year

Eligibility

Must be a declared BFA Acting or BA/BS Theatre Arts major

Must be full-time with a minimum of 12 credit hours and have contributed significantly to department productions
