Audition Requirements

Songs

Requirements

Two contrasting songs

WVU uses Option C of the Musical Theater Common Prescreen song criteria as its guideline — you choose either Option A or Option B:

Option A: one song written before 1970 + one contrasting song written after 1970 (musical theatre, pop, hip-hop, folk, rock, rap, soul, country, punk, etc.)

Option B: one musical theatre song from any time period + one contrasting song of your choice in any style

Video submissions: each song recommended 60-90 seconds

Song Tips

Contrast examples: fast vs slow tempo, sustained melodic vs speech-like singing, dramatic vs comedic, belt vs head/falsetto mix

If you lack an accompanist or track, apps like Harmony Helper can generate a piano track from your sheet music

Monologues

Requirements

One monologue from a published play or by a professional writer (someone whose plays have been produced, even if not professionally published)

WVU uses Option A of the Musical Theater Common Prescreen monologue criteria as its guideline

Video submissions: recommended 60-90 seconds

Monologue Tips

Choose age-appropriate material (generally within 5-10 years of your age) that feels authentic to your culture, background, and lived experience

Active monologues in direct communication with an imaginary scene partner tend to work better than story/remembrance pieces; avoid pieces relying on extreme emotions

Dance

On-Campus

Dance call taught to the group — no prepared materials needed

Bring a change of clothes you can move in

Dance call begins 10 minutes after monologue/song presentations conclude

Virtual (MTCP Option A)

Show us your best version of dancing or moving — include at least one turn, one jump, and one kick (or other suitable rotation, elevation, and extension that works for your body)

Dance in whatever discipline you feel most confident: jazz, ballet, tap, modern, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, or styles beyond American and Euro-western traditions

Can be self-choreographed but must be a solo video — may use recent videos from a show/concert if you are the only one in the frame

Recommended 60-90 seconds

Resource combo videos available from Abilene Christian, Emerson, Nazareth, and Texas State

Wildcard / Special SkillOptional

Optional wild card video — an opportunity to show your personality or share something about you. Can be ANYTHING: a special skill, an interesting story about yourself, a passion speech, an instrument you play, etc. Examples of successful submissions include: singing a pop song, singing or playing an original composition/song/poem or choreographed dance, performing an SNL-styled comedic character skit, sharing a meaningful hobby or activity, performing in a language other than English in which you are fluent, playing an instrument, making a how-to video on something you excel at (baking, calligraphy, gymnastics), or showing a different dance style (tap, hip hop, lyrical, ballet, etc.)

Application Logistics

Acceptance requires both admission to WVU and a successful audition with the School of Theatre and Dance

Complete the program application and audition registration on Acceptd

You do not need to wait for a university admission decision before submitting the Acceptd audition form

Eligibility

You may secure your audition time before or after your WVU university application is completed

An admission decision cannot be made until after you have been admitted to WVU

What's The Process

Audition Process

Musical Theatre auditions are offered in on-campus and virtual formats — the video submission IS the complete audition, not a prescreen

Select your audition day or virtual audition when completing the program application on Acceptd

After the audition-day events conclude, all remaining auditions are handled virtually through video submission on Acceptd

Upload separate videos for each song, monologue, dance, slate, and optional wild card

Musical Theatre auditions are not available as private appointments

Audition Expectations

WVU uses the Musical Theater Common Prescreen criteria (song Option C, monologue Option A, dance Option A) as guidelines for audition material — there is no separate prescreen round

On-campus auditioners follow the same song and monologue criteria and complete a group dance call; audition videos are not required for students auditioning on campus

Dance call begins 10 minutes after monologue/song presentations conclude

Virtual auditions are reviewed with the next on-campus audition group — a video submitted January 1 is reviewed with the January audition group

Audition registration for 2027 admission opens September 1, 2026
