MTCP Song Option A

Two Contrasting Songs

One song written before 1970 (musical theater, Golden Age, pop, folk, rock, soul, country, etc.)

One song written after 1970 (musical theater, pop, hip-hop, folk, rock, rap, soul, country, punk, etc.)

Should contrast the style of the first selection

Song Tips

Contrast examples: fast tempo vs slow tempo, sustained melodic singing vs speech-like singing, dramatic vs comedic, belt vs head/falsetto mix

One Monologue

One monologue from a published play or written by a professional writer

A professional writer is someone whose plays have been produced, even if not professionally published

Dance

Dance Video

Show us your best version of choreographed dancing or moving

Include at least one turn, one jump and one kick (or other suitable rotation, elevation, and extension that works for your body)

Full-body framing; MTCP recommends 60-90 seconds per video

Songs

Live Audition Songs

Two contrasting one-minute song excerpts from musicals

One should be from contemporary theatre repertoire or reflect recent styles

Songs should show two facets of your singing, such as classic or contemporary

Live Audition Accompaniment

Provide sheet music in your desired key

Mark music to the appropriate length

Bring double-sided copies in a binder for the accompanist

Live piano accompaniment is provided on campus

Monologues

Live Audition Monologue

One one-minute monologue selected from plays

Choose a role roughly your age

Not from musicals or stand-alone monologue collections

Dance

Dance Placement

Auditioning students also will participate in a dance audition for placement purposes

Wear appropriate dance attire

Change into regular clothes for the remainder of the audition

Live Virtual Audition: Dance Video

Virtual auditioners must also submit a dance video; upload it now or at the time of your audition

Review and learn the set dance routine (full and slow demonstration videos on Acceptd)

Do not mirror the movement—reverse it (begins moving to the right)

Music: "On Broadway" by George Benson—dance begins at the 16 second mark

Wear proper dance attire and appropriate shoes

If significant tap experience, include a brief triple time step at end

Full-body framing; max 60 seconds

Application Logistics

Complete the B.F.A Acting and Musical Theatre Admission and Scholarship Application (Microsoft Forms) to schedule the audition

Applicants for admission and scholarship must submit the following five items no later than two weeks before the audition date: (1) a completed admission/scholarship application, (2) the $25 audition/interview fee, (3) a recent headshot or photograph, (4) a resume of pertinent experience and training as a performer, (5) a response to the personal statement prompt

Optional Acceptd prescreen/video upload is available; it is not required to schedule the audition

Program participates in MTCP; options are Song A, Monologue A, Dance A, and Ballet B (optional)
