Audition Process
•Bullet: You must be admitted to Western Michigan University; composition faculty then assess each student's potential for success in the program
•Bullet: Submit your portfolio with your Music Application, then attend an information session presented by the composition faculty on the New Student Admissions Day of your choice
Audition Expectations
•Bullet: You have a 20-minute audition with a composition faculty member, who asks about your portfolio, your interest in the program, your knowledge of music theory, and your goals
•Bullet: If you are auditioning remotely, a phone interview is scheduled
•Bullet: If you intend to take private instrumental lessons at WMU, you must also complete an instrumental audition
•Bullet: Admitted students either may register for Composition I in the freshman year or must register for it in the sophomore year, depending on prior theory and compositional experience
•Bullet: If the faculty do not feel you are prepared to study composition now, that does not affect your ability to audition into the School of Music on an instrument; you can audition twice for any program
•Bullet: After your first two composition classes, you undergo another evaluation to advance in the program
