PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY

Combines artistic practice with scholarly inquiry — equal emphasis on craft and critical thinking
Primarily directed toward studying theatre as an interpretive and communicative tool

TRAINING & CURRICULUM

Comprehensive 9-course major covering acting, directing, playwriting, design, literature, theory, history, and technical production
Students study both Western and non-Western theatrical traditions

Mentored relationships with faculty and guest artists

PRODUCTION OPPORTUNITIES

Minimum 4 department productions required for all majors, including stage management experience
Department produces approximately 3 productions per academic year
Independent projects and self-produced performance opportunities available

FACILITIES

The '62 Center for Theatre and Dance — state-of-the-art multi-venue complex
MainStage — courtyard-style proscenium theatre for major productions and touring artists
CenterStage — 150-seat flexible flat-floor studio theatre with moveable balconies and lift
Adams Memorial Theater — intimate 220-seat thrust-type theatre

STUDY ABROAD & OFF-CAMPUS

Affiliated with the National Theatre Institute for intensive off-campus theatre study
Study abroad supported — students have studied at Oxford and other international programs
One-semester abroad easily accommodated with careful planning

HONORS & OUTCOMES

Degree with Honors available through yearlong senior project (performance or thesis)
Typical class of 6-10 majors allows for highly individualized mentorship
Students equipped to proceed to graduate and professional schools in theatre
