Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire

Prepare solo literature that best demonstrates your technical ability and musicality, including tone and lyricism

You may present one work, such as a concerto or sonata, or multiple contrasting pieces

Percussionists prepare repertoire on snare drum, mallet percussion, and timpani as applicable to skill level

Consult your private teacher for repertoire input

Accompaniment

A staff accompanist is available for the live School of Music audition

Application Logistics

Submit the university application through Westminster's application or the Common App

Schedule the School of Music audition through Westminster's audition request form

Westminster states that the undergraduate application is free and no application fee waiver is needed

Eligibility

Prospective music majors must fulfill Westminster's general admission requirements

Prospective music majors must audition for the School of Music to demonstrate proficiency in at least one performance area

Placement

Admitted students complete an Online Music Theory Diagnostic Test and an Aural Skills Diagnostic Test for course placement only, not for admission

Important Notes

The Music Major or Minor Talent Award ranges from $500 to $1,500 per year and is renewable

Westminster states that the Music Major or Minor Talent Award requires an audition

What's The Process

Audition Process

Westminster holds Music Scholarship & Admission Audition Days in the fall and spring

Students may schedule an in-person audition through the School of Music audition request form

Auditions may be scheduled on different dates at the discretion of the music faculty

Remote auditions are available for applicants who live more than 100 miles from campus

Remote Option

Record one continuous performance and share an unlisted YouTube, Google Drive, or Dropbox link, or mail a DVD to the School of Music

A live Skype or FaceTime video conference may be scheduled instead of a recorded submission

Remote applicants complete the Online Music Theory Diagnostic Test and schedule an Aural Skills Diagnostic Test by Skype, FaceTime, or phone

The remote audition is not complete until the Online Music Theory Diagnostic Test is complete

Post-Enrollment

Students may enter the performance major provisionally during the first semester

A faculty jury at the end of the first semester decides whether the student qualifies to continue as a performance major
