Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Monologues

Requirements

Two Contrasting monologues, no more than 3 min total

Choose characters close to yourself in age from scripts written after 1930

Selections should be of a contrasting nature

Must be memorized and fully prepared

Material Selection

Do not select Shakespeare or classical pieces

Do not do extreme characterizations of body, voice, or speech

Characters should be as natural, authentic, and close to you in real life as possible

Do not alter your dialect or accent — use your own speech

Additional Materials

Portfolio

Showcase materials demonstrating your work and interest in theatre and/or the arts

If you have directed: bring pictures, video, promptbook, program, etc.

May also include work in acting, design, choreography, opera, singing, photography, video, film, painting, design, or writing

Share your artistic interests

Essay with Pictures

Separate from the university admission essay

750-1,000 words on one of the following:

Tell a compelling story and describe how you would bring it to the stage

What surprises or inspires you about live performance? How might you create such a moment?

How would you share your passion for theatre with children? Describe a project you could direct

Audition Expectations

Two parts: monologue audition + interview with portfolio review

Check-in at 8:30 a.m., auditions conclude by early afternoon

May be asked to do exercises and improvisations during audition

Dress in comfortable clothing for brief group warm-up session

Time to change before performing audition pieces
