Audition Requirements

Repertoire List

Two prepared selections in contrasting tempo and historical styles, chosen from etudes, solo works, or single movements of concertos, sonatas, or suites

Scales & Technique

One three-octave major scale and one three-octave melodic minor scale of the applicant's choice

Chromatic scale demonstrating the instrument's full range

Resume (Optional)

You may submit a résumé or other supporting documents that you feel would be helpful for the Department of Music Audition Committee to review

Application Logistics

Step 1: Apply to Wayne State University through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions

Step 2: Apply to the Department of Music via the Acceptd platform and choose an Audition Day

Submit the Wayne State University application at least one month before your chosen Audition Day

Priority departmental scholarship consideration requires completing all materials by the March 5, 2027 audition date

Program Requirements

All auditions for undergraduate programs include a placement test in music theory

Apply to the Department of Music through Acceptd and select an Audition Day

Perform a live audition on campus, or submit a recorded audition if you cannot attend

Recorded-audition applicants receive submission instructions after their application is approved

Audition Format

On-campus auditions occur on scheduled Audition Days

Virtual/recorded auditions are accepted when applicants cannot travel to campus

Talent Scholarships

Awarded to undergraduate music majors with superior academic records and high musical achievement

Automatic consideration when you apply to an undergraduate program with a complete audition/interview by the scholarship deadline

Renewable up to four years; requires a 3.0 GPA, major ensemble participation, and 12+ credits per semester

Youth Ensemble Scholarships

Additional awards for incoming students who performed with select metro-Detroit youth ensembles

Includes Civic Youth Ensembles, Detroit Metropolitan Youth Symphony, Oakland Youth Orchestras, and Community Music School of Detroit
