Audition Requirements

Repertoire List

Prepare principal-instrument or voice repertoire based on your audition area

Strings: two-octave major and melodic minor scales with arpeggios, plus two prepared selections in contrasting tempo and historical styles

Winds and brass: three-octave major and melodic minor scales plus two contrasting prepared selections

Voice: one classical art song plus one selection of the applicant's interest in any genre

Two-Step Admission

Step 1: Apply to Wayne State University through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions

Step 2: Apply to the Department of Music via the Acceptd platform and choose an Audition Day

Timing

Submit the Wayne State University application at least one month before your chosen Audition Day

Priority departmental scholarship consideration requires completing all materials by the March 5, 2027 audition date

Theory Placement

Admitted students take a music theory placement test at the audition — for course placement only, not admission

Perform a principal-instrument or voice audition on campus or by recording

Complete a brief faculty interview — typically the same day as an in-person audition, or via Zoom for virtual applicants

Talent Scholarships

Awarded to undergraduate music majors with superior academic records and high musical achievement

Automatic consideration when you apply to an undergraduate program with a complete audition/interview by the scholarship deadline

Renewable up to four years; requires a 3.0 GPA, major ensemble participation, and 12+ credits per semester

Youth Ensemble Scholarships

Additional awards for incoming students who performed with select metro-Detroit youth ensembles

Includes Civic Youth Ensembles, Detroit Metropolitan Youth Symphony, Oakland Youth Orchestras, and Community Music School of Detroit
