Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire List

•Repertoire: 10 minutes of memorized solo repertoire (all pieces must be memorized)

•Repertoire: Recommended composers: Carulli, Carcassi (Studies Op. 60), Brouwer (Simple Studies vols. III-IV), Tarrega, Sor, Villa-Lobos

•Scales/technique: Technical exercises including scales

•Sight-reading: Read music (not fast) from a written score in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th positions

Teacher Certification

•Leads to Texas EC-12 Music teacher certification

•Admission to the UTRGV Teacher Education Program is required during the degree to complete certification — this is a progression requirement, not part of the admission audition

Placement

•Admitted students take a music theory and aural-skills placement assessment for course placement only — it does not affect admission

What's The Process

Audition Process

•Step 1: Apply to UTRGV through ApplyTexas

•Step 2: Submit the School of Music Audition Request Form (Microsoft Forms) for a separate music audition on your principal instrument

•All students, including transfers, must pass a performance audition to be admitted to a School of Music major

Audition Expectations

•Live audition or video audition accepted

•An accompanist is provided for officially scheduled live audition dates (bring a clean copy of your music for the pianist)

Scholarship Info

•Music scholarships are awarded through the audition

•Students residing in TMEA Region 15 or Region 28 must audition in person to be considered for a music scholarship

•Students outside those regions may submit a video audition and still be considered for admission
