Repertoire List

Classical guitar prepared repertoire: one Tarrega work (Alborada, Marieta, Pavana in Em, Maria, or Mazurka en Sol) and one J.S. Bach work (Prelude BWV 999, Prelude BWV 1007, Allemande BWV 1007, or Allemande BWV 996)

Scales & Technique

Classical-focused applicants prepare five arpeggio formulas from Giuliani 120 Arpeggios (nos. 1-20)

Jazz/commercial guitar applicants prepare intermediate fingerstyle and flat-picking technique, two-octave major scales (G and C, third position), and pentatonic scales (E minor and G major)

Program Requirements

UTEP Department of Music is a National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) accredited institution

Bachelor of Music in Performance offered in orchestra/band instruments, keyboard, voice, and classical or jazz guitar

Students must place into MUSA 1195 Individual Instruction by audition; those not placing may take pre-major lessons for up to 2 semesters

Admitted students take a Theory Advancement Test for course placement only — not for admission

Complete university admission and scholarship application prior to auditioning (recommended)

Complete FAFSA for financial aid consideration

What's The Process

Audition Process

Auditions are for acceptance into the program, studio placement, and scholarship consideration

Audition for and be accepted by an applied faculty member in your performance area

Check-in at the Fox Fine Arts Music Building, first floor

Arrive at least 15 minutes before your designated audition time

Audition days: Monday, February 8, 2027 and Saturday, March 6, 2027

Schedule your audition through the Department of Music audition portal

Bachelor of Music in Performance offers both classical and jazz guitar tracks
