Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Songs

One 16-Bar Musical Theatre Song, 1 Min Max

Minimum 16 bars from a musical theatre song

Not to exceed 1 minute

Singing is encouraged but not required

Monologues

Requirements

Two contrasting monologues, 90 sec each (3 min total)

One comic and one serious, OR one classical and one contemporary

Additional Materials

Headshot (Required)

Professional-quality headshot not required

Submit with resume

Resume (Required)

List your theatre experience

Essay (Required)

Short essay summarizing reasons for wanting to pursue a career in theatre and career goals

Recommendations (Required)

Names and contact information for 3 references

Eligibility

Minimum 2.75 overall GPA required for department admission

Fall, Spring, and Summer start options are currently shown on the department form

Acceptance is competitive and not guaranteed

Program Expectations

Students are expected to audition for all department productions and be available to accept any role

Admitted students meet with both the musical theatre area advisor and Caine School of the Arts advisor

Important Notes

Apply by Dec. 1 for full academic scholarship consideration; the source does not publish a year for that recommendation

All out-of-state students should apply for residency for future tuition reduction

What's The Process

Audition Process

Apply to USU first, then submit supplemental materials to the Department of Theatre Arts

Select Musical Theatre on the online Application Intention form and upload supporting files

Once the USU referral and supporting materials are received, the department may contact selected applicants to schedule an audition/interview

Due to application volume, not every applicant will be auditioned; scheduling may take several weeks

Scholarship Info

Department Scholarships

David E. Daley & Leona E. Daley Theatre Arts Scholarship: Theatre Arts major/minor; primary criterion is financial need; full-time with 2.2+ undergraduate GPA or 3.0+ graduate GPA

George B. & Marie Eccles Caine Theatre Arts Scholarship: full-time Theatre Arts major, 2.5+ GPA, production participation, and applicants should be prepared to audition/interview

College of Arts & Sciences scholarships require the required form and any additional department steps during the application period
