Audition Requirements

Repertoire

Instrumentalists: prepare approximately seven minutes of music including at least one jazz selection and one classical selection

In the jazz selection, demonstrate jazz improvisation (and comping or walking bass lines as applicable); backing tracks may be used

In the classical selection, play an etude or piece from the classical repertoire listed for your instrument

Vocal Jazz applicants: prepare 3 songs — two contrasting jazz selections demonstrating improvisation in at least one, plus one classical piece (no musical theatre preferred)

Accompaniment

Accompaniment is optional for instrumental auditions

Instrumentalists may bring their own accompanist or use a recording — no accompanist is provided

Accompaniment

Vocalists must perform to accompaniment (live or pre-recorded) — no a cappella

A staff accompanist is provided on the audition day

To use the staff accompanist, submit your audition excerpt to usm.music.auditions@maine.edu at least two weeks before your audition; you may also bring your own accompanist

Application fee waivers available through Acceptd

Placement

Admitted students complete a music theory and aural-skills digital assessment on the audition day — used for course placement only, not for admission

Certification

Prepares students to apply for PK-12 state teacher certification in Maine and other states

Praxis I must be completed during the sophomore year; Praxis II must be taken before the Professional Internship

Step 1: Apply to the University of Southern Maine

Step 2: Register for an audition and apply to the Osher School of Music via Acceptd

Audition Expectations

An audition is required for all Osher School of Music undergraduate degrees

In-person auditions held at the Crewe Center for the Arts, USM Portland Campus

Video auditions also accepted via Acceptd

Music Education applicants complete a jazz/classical performance audition on their principal instrument plus a brief interview with the music education faculty
