Prescreen Repertoire
•Bullet: Three to five selections of contrasting styles from the standard jazz repertoire, all on the applicant's primary instrument

•Bullet: Lead trumpet: include "Well You Needn't" (Thelonious Monk) and "Chi-Chi" (Charlie Parker) as two of the selections, plus two lead trumpet excerpts of contrasting styles (e.g., up-tempo, ballad) from the big band literature
•Bullet: Bass: include "Well You Needn't" (Thelonious Monk) and "Chi-Chi" (Charlie Parker) as two of the selections, playing the head, a walking bass line, and a solo on each selection; also include four 2-octave major scales and four 2-octave minor scales (two of each arco, two of each pizzicato)

•Bullet: Medium-up 32-bar form selection (180-220 bpm), Anthropology or Oleo: melody once with band, 2 choruses of time behind soloists, trade 8's with the drums for 2 choruses, melody out
•Bullet: Latin-to-swing selection (Latin on the A sections, swing on the B section), Bye-Ya or Caravan: melody once with band, 1 chorus of time behind soloists, 1 chorus of drum solo, melody out
•Bullet: Brushes, medium-tempo selection, Just Friends or Bye Bye Blackbird: melody once with band, 1 chorus of time behind soloists, melody out
•Bullet: Brushes, ballad-tempo selection, Misty or I Can't Get Started (or something similar): melody once with band, 1 chorus of time behind soloists, melody out
•Bullet: Groove demonstrations, played unaccompanied for a minimum of 8 bars each: bossa nova (120-134 bpm); two Afro-Cuban rhythms, one in 6/8-12/8 (triplet based) and one in 4/4 (8th or 16th based), e.g., Bembe, Nanigo, Abaquà-Mozambique, Songo, Merengue (90-120 bpm); jazz waltz (approximately 130 bpm); a rock groove; a funk groove (88-94 bpm)
•Bullet: Snare solo, performed in its entirety and unaccompanied: one of Charlie Wilcoxon's Modern Rudimental Solos, "Rolling in Rhythm" or "Rhythmania"
Introductory Video
•Bullet: Required of all undergraduate applicants: a single-take, unedited, and preferably unscripted 1-2 minute video that offers a brief personal introduction and answers the following question: "How do you envision using your USC Thornton education to become a force for positive change in the evolution of the music profession and music as an art form?"
Jazz Studies Capstone Project Video
•Bullet: Required of all undergraduate applicants: a single-take, unedited, and preferably unscripted video of no more than two minutes. In this video applicants must answer the following question: "If you were pitching your capstone project idea today, what is the project you would propose and why?"
