Audition Requirements

Repertoire

Trumpet: an etude (Charlier, Arban, Bousquet, Brandt, etc.) plus a standard solo or concerto movement

Horn: two contrasting selections from the standard solo repertoire

Trombone, Tenor or Bass: one standard solo selection

Euphonium: Arban Grand Study, a Bordogni etude, a solo selection, and excerpts

Tuba: one standard solo plus required orchestral excerpts

Scales & Technique

Major and minor scales, arpeggios, and a chromatic scale over the instrument's range

Application Logistics

Step 1: Apply to UNT via Common App, ApplyTexas, or the UNT website

Step 2: Complete the separate College of Music application via Acceptd (opens September 1 annually)

Step 3: Select your audition area and instrument, then indicate Performance as your desired degree

Step 4: Audition on a scheduled Denton campus date after faculty review

Deadlines

November 1 for consideration at the December audition date

December 1 preferred for January and February audition dates

February 15 final deadline for the music application and final video auditions

Placement

Admitted students take music theory and aural-skills placement exams at orientation — for course placement only, not admission

Transfer Pathway

UNT publishes BM Performance Transfer Guides/TCCNS course maps for performance specializations, giving transfer students a course-planning path before applying. Principal-instrument audition requirements still apply, and studio, ensemble, and upper-division requirements are completed through UNT placement/advising.

What's The Process

Audition Process

Auditions occur either as a live on-campus audition or a final video audition

Submit any required screening materials via Acceptd after completing the UNT and College of Music applications

Applicants invited for a live audition are notified through Acceptd messaging after faculty review

Final video auditions are available for applicants unable to attend in person or after live spots fill

Audition Expectations

Live auditions occur on scheduled Denton campus dates

Sight-reading may be included at the audition

Unless the instrument specifies otherwise, classical instrumental applicants audition without accompaniment of any kind

Scholarship recipients and award amounts are determined by faculty committees
