Prescreen Requirements

Repertoire List

•Prepare jazz selections of contrasting tempos and styles on your principal instrument (e.g., medium-tempo standard, jazz blues, ballad, up-tempo/rhythm changes, Latin/funk)

•Repertoire list/transcription: saxophone, trumpet, and trombone applicants prepare a jazz transcription

•Jazz piano and several areas require a typed list of standards known from memory

Accompaniment

•Accompaniment tracks are acceptable for improvisation portions; live rhythm section accompaniment is preferred where available

Application Logistics

•Step 1: Apply to UNT via Common App, ApplyTexas, or the UNT website

•Step 2: Complete the separate College of Music application via Acceptd (opens September 1 annually)

•Step 3: Select Jazz as your area and your principal instrument, then indicate Jazz Studies as your desired degree

•November 1 for consideration at the December audition date

•December 1 preferred for January and February audition dates

•February 1 final deadline for the music application and final video auditions

Admission Pathway

•Admitted students take music theory and aural-skills placement exams at orientation — for course placement only, not admission

Transfer Pathway

UNT publishes BM Jazz Studies Transfer Guides/TCCNS course maps, giving transfer students a course-planning path before applying. Jazz applicants still complete the College of Music jazz screening/live audition process and placement requirements.

What's The Process

Audition Process

•A screening video is required of all jazz applicants and submitted through Acceptd

•Invited applicants complete a live on-campus audition with the jazz faculty, or a final video audition with a virtual component

•Prospective jazz majors whose principal instrument is trumpet or trombone play one jazz audition only — no classical audition is required

•Undergraduate jazz piano applicants also perform a brief diagnostic classical audition that does not significantly weight the admission decision

Audition Expectations

•Live auditions occur on scheduled Denton campus dates

•New students may begin the degree in the Fall semester only
