Prescreen Requirements

Portfolio (Required)

Submit a portfolio of original compositions demonstrating knowledge of contemporary repertoire, styles, and instrumentation

Portfolio may include notated scores and accompanying audio examples where available

Portfolio for transfer applicants: include several representative manuscript compositions

Application Logistics

Step 1: Apply to UNT via Common App, ApplyTexas, or the UNT website

Step 2: Complete the separate College of Music application via Acceptd (opens September 1 annually)

Step 3: Select your audition instrument/area, then indicate Composition as your desired degree

Deadlines

November 1 for consideration at the December audition date

December 1 preferred for January and February audition dates

February 15 final deadline for the music application and final video auditions

Placement

Admitted students take music theory and aural-skills placement exams at orientation — for course placement only, not admission

Transfer Pathway

UNT publishes a BM Composition Transfer Guide/TCCNS course map, giving transfer students a course-planning path before applying. Composition and Electronics applicants still complete the College of Music application, portfolio or screening review, and required audition/interview steps.

What's The Process

Audition & Interview Process

Submit a composition portfolio through Acceptd as the screening round

Composition applicants also audition on a principal instrument or voice using that area's concentration-level repertoire

Composition applicants who audition on campus participate in a faculty interview on the same audition day

Applicants auditioning by final video are contacted for a virtual interview as needed

Audition Expectations

Live auditions/interviews occur on scheduled Denton campus dates

Final video auditions are available for applicants unable to attend in person

Application and audition also serve as the music scholarship application

Competitive music scholarships are based on talent and professional promise

Scholarship recipients and award amounts are determined by faculty committees
