Songs

Requirements

Three contrasting pieces, memorized

Two must be Western European classical art songs or arias

One piece in English

One piece in a language other than English

One piece of any genre, including classical

Solo parts from choral works are not accepted

Accompaniment

Live auditions: bring sheet music for the pianist; no lead sheets

Video auditions: use a live accompanist or a high-quality backing track (no vocal tracks)

Step 1: Apply to the University of Nevada, Reno

Step 4: Take the music theory placement examination

Admission Pathway

Admitted students take the Music Theory Entrance Exam before enrolling in MUS 203 Music Theory I — for theory course placement, not admission

Program Requirements

Coursework prepares graduates for Nevada teacher licensure, with flexibility to obtain licensure in California and other states

Audition Process

Apply and be admitted to UNR as an undergraduate student before auditioning

Audition on your principal instrument or voice, live on campus or by recorded video

Live audition: call the School of Music office at (775) 784-6145 after Jan. 1, 2027 to reserve a time

Video audition: upload your video links in Step 3 of the School of Music Scholarship Application

Talent Scholarships

Available to incoming undergraduate students

Must be admitted to UNR and submit a separate scholarship application

Audition is used for both program acceptance and scholarship consideration

Incoming undergraduates submit the University's Scholarship Application (MyNevada, Supplemental Forms) and the School of Music Scholarship application by Feb. 15, 2027

In-person auditioners submit the School of Music Scholarship Application on or before the live audition date, Jan. 16, 2027
