•Prepare a prepared-repertoire audition on your principal instrument (strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, harp, or piano)
Scales & Technique
•Scales appropriate to your instrument — typically two or three major (and where applicable minor) scales, plus a chromatic scale covering your full range
•Percussion: two-mallet marimba/xylophone solo or etude, a concert snare drum solo or etude, and a timpani solo or etude
Repertoire
•Two contrasting selections (movements from a sonata or concerto, etudes, or ensemble excerpts) that demonstrate technical proficiency and melodic lyricism
•Strings (cello): include one movement from a J. S. Bach Suite for Solo Cello
•Piano applicants follow the Piano Performance repertoire (a Bach Prelude and Fugue or comparable Baroque work, a Classical sonata, and a Romantic/Impressionist/20th-21st-century work, performed from memory — at least 15 minutes live or 20 minutes on video)
Accompaniment
•A staff accompanist is provided for live auditions
•Recorded auditions may be performed unaccompanied as appropriate to the instrument
