Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire List

•Principal string repertoire: audition on violin, viola, cello, or double bass

•Violin, Viola, Cello repertoire: 2 scales of choice (one major, one minor, 3 octaves); one solo etude of choice; one movement of a concerto, sonata, or concert piece

•Double Bass repertoire: 2 scales of choice (one major, one minor, 2 octaves); one solo etude of choice such as Simandl; one movement of a concerto, sonata, or concert piece

Accompaniment

•String accompaniment is preferred but not required for the audition

Application Logistics

•Audition registration deadline: February 13, 2026

•Sign up via the Department of Music audition form

•A short interview with Dr. Aaron Jacobs is required in addition to the string audition

Placement

•Admitted students take a music theory and aural-skills placement exam at orientation — for course placement only, not admission

•Apply to the University of New Mexico, then schedule a music audition
