Repertoire
•Audition on your principal jazz instrument; requirements vary by instrument area
•Drum set applicants: demonstrate swing, jazz brush playing, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, rock, and funk styles; read intermediate drum-set charts; play over the form of a jazz tune (12-bar blues or 32-bar AABA); and trade 4- or 8-measure solos
•Percussion jazz applicants audition in drum set plus one other area (snare, mallets, or timpani)
•Wind and brass applicants typically prepare contrasting solo works or etudes and major scales; trombone applicants may include a jazz standard with improvisation
Improvisation
•Be prepared to demonstrate jazz improvisation; ensembles are by audition only
Accompaniment
•A collaborative pianist is available; bring clean copies of your music in a binder or on an iPad
