Audition Requirements

Repertoire

•Audition on your primary performance area (keyboard, voice, or instrument) for admission, following that area's requirements

•Keyboard: two contrasting solo keyboard selections (memorization optional), contrasting in period, tempo, or style

•Voice: two contrasting selections that contrast in period, tempo, or language; sight singing on audition day

•Instrumental: solo(s) and/or etudes of contrasting style, about 8 minutes total; scales and sight-reading may be requested

Teacher Recommendation

•Ask a private instructor or high school director to submit the Music Teacher Recommendation form

Application Logistics

•Submit the Music Major Audition Application and supporting forms at least two weeks before your preferred audition date

•Students may not begin a music major or enroll in music courses until accepted by the Department of Music through audition

•Must audition on or before March 5, 2027 for 26/27 scholarship consideration

Emphasis Admission

•All applicants first audition on a primary performance area (keyboard, voice, or instrument) for admission to the music program

•Admission to the Theory Composition emphasis requires approval of the history-theory faculty and should be sought by the end of the freshman year

•Only students with an excellent overall academic record and demonstrated potential are admitted to the emphasis

•Required General Studies Humanities must include four units of French or German

Placement

•Admitted students take a music theory and aural-skills placement exam at orientation for course placement only, not admission

Audition Process

•Apply to UW-Whitewater for university admission first

•Submit the Music Major Audition Application via Qualtrics form at least two weeks before your preferred audition date

•Ask a private instructor or high school director to submit a Teacher Recommendation form

•Audition on one of the scheduled audition dates in your primary performance area

Audition Day Schedule

•9:15-9:45 AM: parking and registration

•9:45-10:00 AM: welcome and faculty introductions

•10:00 AM: warm-up

•10:15 AM: auditions begin

•Post-audition: meet with studio faculty for questions and feedback
