Training

A four-year classical accordion performance degree at one of only a few programs of its kind worldwide — established in 1972, the oldest accordion program in North America — with individual instruction across Baroque, Classical, and modern/contemporary repertoire.

Paid professional work on and off campus is facilitated through the Music Booking Office; alumnus Michael Bridge (BMus 2015, MMus 2017, DMA 2023) has performed with the Metropolitan Opera and tours internationally with Bridge & Wolak and the Ladom Ensemble.

Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire List

Minimum RCM Level 10 repertoire for Bachelor of Music in Performance (classical free-bass accordion)

Three contrasting works demonstrating your range of musical abilities: one Baroque or Classical work, and two Modern/Contemporary works (at least one originally written for the accordion)

Accompaniment

Accordion auditions do not require an accompanist

Questionnaire (Required)

Complete the Music Questionnaire through Join U of T after the OUAC application is received

Include instrument choices, audition method, repertoire, music theory background, and any required recording links

Essay (Required)

Respond to one of four prompts in 250–1,000 words

Letters of Recommendation (Required)

Provide contact information for two unrelated references who can comment on musical or academic ability

The Faculty contacts referees directly after the required form is submitted

Application Logistics

Apply to the U of T Faculty of Music through OUAC; after U of T receives the OUAC application, complete the supplementary Music Questionnaire through the Join U of T portal.

Accordion applicants follow the Bachelor of Music in Performance pathway.

Eligibility

All undergraduate Faculty of Music applicants must complete an audition/interview to assess musical proficiency.

Transfer Pathway

BM Performance Accordion transfer applicants with post-secondary music study can request Advanced Standing in the Music Questionnaire for possible higher-year placement. Admission depends on the audition and prior academic record, with audition repertoire expected at the requested year-of-entry level.

What's The Process

Audition Process

Applicants within 300 km of Toronto audition and interview in person; those farther than 300 km may submit a recorded audition and complete the interview and skills assessment online.

After the Music Questionnaire is reviewed, applicants are notified when the online booking system opens.

At the Audition

Expect a panel of 2-3 faculty members; perform selected pieces or excerpts from your prepared repertoire and bring one copy of your scores for the panel.

The interview covers repertoire knowledge, composer and structural details, musical interests, and career goals.

There are no theory assessments on audition day.
