The BA in Music Performance is a 120-hour liberal-arts degree centered on advanced work in an instrument or voice and the classical tradition.

Training

The Instrumental Track combines 40 hours of musicianship with principal-instrument study, major ensembles, recital preparation, music theory and history, and upper-division coursework.

Students perform in UIW concert and chamber choirs, orchestras, bands, musicals, operas, and community/professional settings; the degree culminates in a public recital on the principal instrument.

The department also provides opportunities to study jazz through electives and to perform with groups such as the Chorus of Opera San Antonio and YOSA.

Facilities

Training takes place in Luella Bennack Music Center, including 500-seat Diane Bennack Concert Hall, 101-seat Ingrid Seddon Recital Hall, a recording studio with a Yamaha Disklavier, piano lab, computer lab, rehearsal halls, teaching studios, and modular practice rooms.

Audition Requirements

Repertoire

Brass, Strings, Winds, or Percussion: two selections from the standard repertoire in contrasting styles

For example, etude selections or movements of a solo sonata or concerto

Solos from the Texas UIL Grade 1 list or the current year's All-State etudes are recommended

A third selection in jazz style may be played

Admission

An entrance audition is required for all music majors and minors, including transfer students

Admitted students complete a music theory assessment at the audition for course placement only — it does not affect admission

What's The Process

Audition Format

Perform two contrasting selections on your instrument (brass, strings, winds, or percussion) for a faculty panel

An optional third jazz-style selection may be added

In-Person Audition

Held at UIW's Luella Bennack Music Center

Arrive 15 minutes early to warm up in available practice rooms

Perform your two pieces, then wait while faculty deliberate and provide feedback

A music theory assessment is administered after the performance

Total audition time: approximately 30-45 minutes

Online Audition

Submit a recorded audition via Acceptd if you cannot audition in person

Camera should capture facial expressions and the body from the knees up

Portrait or landscape orientation accepted

Use a smartphone on a tripod or a video camera with a microphone

No audio processing (e.g., reverb) allowed

Scholarship Info

Music Scholarships

Up to $4,000 per academic year for music majors

Renewable for five years

Full-time enrollment (12+ credit hours minimum)

Enrollment in a major ensemble (Chorale, Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, or Orchestra)

Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher

Demonstrable progress toward degree completion

One-Year Scholarships

Available to current students not at maximum award

Fall semester auditions, disbursed in spring

Minimum 3.0 GPA required

Not renewable; must re-audition in January for multi-year award

Ensemble Scholarships

Tuition discounts for participation in band ensembles

Awarded at discretion of ensemble directors
