Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire List

Two contrasting pieces or etudes

No specific repertoire required

Repertoire should demonstrate your musical and technical ability

If possible, draw selections from different historical periods

Scales & Technique

You may be asked to play scales in a live audition

Scales are not required for video auditions

Instrumental auditions should be unaccompanied

Application Logistics

Submit supplemental School of Performing Arts (SOPA) application after applying via Common App

SOPA application available on application status portal

Spring auditions: December 1 audition deadline

Eligibility

Must be admitted to the University of Redlands to receive audition results

Applications reviewed on a rolling basis after deadline based on capacity

Transfer Pathway

Transfer BM Music Education applicants in Instrumental complete the SOPA application and audition; the audition is a major factor in academic-year placement, and a junior-entry BM audition also serves as the Upper Divisional Qualifying exam.

What's The Process

Audition Process

Spring audition deadline: December 1

Audition Expectations

Perform a principal-instrument audition: 2 contrasting pieces or etudes drawn from different historical periods if possible

In-person auditions: February 7 and February 14 at University of Redlands

Video audition: submit by February 15 via application status portal

Virtual interviews: February 21 (for video auditioners)

Instrumental auditions should be unaccompanied

You may be asked to play scales or sight-read in a live audition (not required for video)

Include the title of each piece and the composer name (verbally or as a video title)

Upload via application status page after submitting SOPA application

Decisions

Audition and scholarship results provided after official university admission
