Audition Requirements

Songs

Requirements

Perform your two strongest original songs; any popular music genre is acceptable

Perform a short cover, 2 minutes maximum, from the approved list: "Hey Jude" (The Beatles), "Let It Be" (The Beatles), "I'm Yours" (Jason Mraz), or "Bubbly" (Colbie Caillat)

Original songs, both music and lyrics, must be written by the applicant; co-written pieces are not appropriate

Songs should be free of profanity and graphic imagery

Accompaniment

Accompany yourself while singing for both originals and the cover

Guitar amp, microphone, and piano are provided for on-campus auditions

No a cappella singing

Lyrics

Bring two copies of the lyrics to your original songs for an on-campus audition

Repertoire List

Bring two copies of lyrics for the original songs at an on-campus audition

For a recorded audition, paste lyrics to both original songs into the video description box

Video

Recorded audition option: submit a non-edited live performance video of the two original songs and required cover

Upload the completed video portfolio to YouTube as unlisted

Questionnaire

Recorded audition option: record responses to the songwriting prompts about goals, influences, instruments, experience, and fit for the major

Submit the Music Audition Application separately from the university application

Common App arts supplement is not accepted for School of Music auditions

University application is still required through Common App

EA/ED registration deadline: November 4, 2026

Regular Decision registration deadline: January 25, 2027

Regional Auditions

San Francisco and Denver regional auditions are offered in January 2027

Audition Format

Complete the Music Audition Application before auditioning

On-campus audition includes original songs, a short cover, and faculty discussion

Be prepared to discuss why you are auditioning for the BA Music degree with an emphasis in Songwriting

Recorded Audition

Recorded auditions are available for students who live 3+ hours from campus

Upload the unlisted video link through the audition application or email it to Music Admission

School of Music may arrange an introductory Zoom interview after the submission deadline
