Application Process
•University application via Common App or school website
•Music Audition Application via department portal (also serves as the scholarship application)
•Application deadline: February 9, 2026
•After February 21, applications may be accepted on a rolling basis as funds allow
•Admitted music majors take a music theory and aural-skills placement assessment for course placement only, not admission
Licensure & Program Length
•Bachelor of Music Education prepares you to teach vocal or instrumental music in grades K-12
•Approved by the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board; aligned with INTASC standards
•Normally 4.5 years including a semester of student teaching
Dual Admission
•Must be admitted to both Northwestern and the Department of Music & Theatre
Audition Events
•February 15 Icebreaker: dinner with music faculty and worship night before the February 16 audition
•February 21: complimentary spring theatre production after the audition
