Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire

•Prepare two contrasting pieces or representative studies for your brass instrument

•Be prepared to perform major scales

•Be prepared to sight-read passages suited to your technical ability

•Acceptd application opens September 21

•Audition dates are available December through August

•Submit the Acceptd application at least two weeks before the chosen audition date

•Priority scholarship deadline: March 1

Transfer Pathway

BA Music transfer applicants may audition during the semester before enrollment, with a dedicated current-and-transfer-student audition date published for spring entry. Department acceptance still requires a successful principal-area audition.

What's The Process

Audition Process

•Apply to UNCW via Common App and audition for the Department of Music.

•Department acceptance does not guarantee university admission.

•Audition application due at least two weeks before requested audition date.

•Recorded auditions through Acceptd are available only when travel to UNCW would be a hardship.

•Recorded auditions are not accepted for scholarship consideration.

Audition Expectations

•Live audition on campus, approximately 10 minutes.

•Applicants are evaluated in their principal performance area and may audition in more than one area.

•Most applicants demonstrate technical ability and sight-reading suited to their area.

Post-Enrollment

•Theory Placement Test determines placement within the music theory sequence.

•Piano Proficiency examination may be requested to determine class piano placement.

•Placement exams do not contribute to admissions decisions.

•Apply for university scholarships early, regardless of enrollment plans.
