Application Logistics

Schedule your principal-instrument audition via the UMSL Music audition registration page

Enrollment

Requires a separate, free university application via Common App or the UMSL website

Program Notes

Leads to State of Missouri K-12 teacher licensure (MOGEA, MOCA, and MEES candidate-level exams)

Upon acceptance, students enroll in a large ensemble compatible with the certification track they pursue — University Singers for vocal/choral certification, or Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, or Orchestra for instrumental certification

Placement

Admitted students take a music theory and aural-skills placement exam at orientation — for course placement only, not admission

Transfer Pathway

Transfer students pursuing BM Music Education can use UMSL's published music articulation pathway, which maps community-college music coursework into a selected UMSL music track. UMSL advisors evaluate how prior coursework applies to this specific degree plan.

What's The Process

Audition Expectations

A successful audition on your principal instrument or voice is required for admission to all UMSL music degree programs

In-person audition on a scheduled audition day; contact Prof. Corinne Stillwell (cstillwell@umsl.edu) to arrange an alternative time if needed

Requirements vary by instrument — voice applicants prepare two contrasting songs plus aural and sight-singing checks; instrumentalists prepare two contrasting selections plus scales, arpeggios, and sight-reading

Decisions

The audition determines admission to the program and is also used for scholarship consideration
