Audition Requirements

Songs

Song Requirements

•Two contrasting selections from traditional classical solo literature

•Both selections must be memorized

•One selection must be in English

•No musical theatre repertoire

•Operatic arias from standard repertoire discouraged (selections from the 24/26/28 Anthology of Italian Songs and Arias are acceptable)

•Representative repertoire includes songs from the Anthology of Italian Songs and Arias of the 17th and 18th centuries, Joan Boytim First Book series

•Live piano accompaniment provided by the Conservatory at no cost (no audio track accompaniments)

Music Preparation

•Music must be photocopied, clearly marked, and in a 3-ring binder for the accompanist

•No original scores or unbound, loose copies

Additional Materials

Submission Requirements

•Artistic resume or CV listing all relevant music experience (ensembles, schools, teachers, performances, awards)

•Two letters of recommendation

•Official transcripts (high school and any college)

•ACT/SAT scores (optional, required for applicable scholarship opportunities)

Application Logistics

•Complete the online UMKC application and Conservatory Supplemental Application

•All application materials must be received by December 15, 2025

•No application fee for domestic undergraduate students ($75 for international students)

•Letters of recommendation must be received by Feb. 1

•Late applications may be accepted based on Vocal Studies Division needs (contact Dr. Raymond Feener at feenerr@umkc.edu)

What's The Process

Audition Process

•Live audition approximately 7-12 minutes in length

•Applicant chooses first vocal selection to perform

•Audition committee may hear as much of prepared repertoire as deemed necessary

•Sight-reading may be requested following the audition

•Musicianship assessment and sight-singing assessment may be required

•Arrive at least 30 minutes early to check in

•Video audition available by request (email cadmissions@umkc.edu for approval)

Transfer Students

•Prepare 2-3 contrasting selections memorized, one in English

•Junior/senior level (4+ semesters of applied vocal study): 3 selections preferred in English, Italian, and German or French

•Applied voice level assigned based on audition

•Full scholarship consideration requires on-campus audition

•Video audition applicants may not receive full scholarship consideration

•All auditions must be completed by March 6 for full scholarship consideration
