Audition Requirements

Repertoire List

Required: prepare audition repertoire on your applied (primary) instrument or voice type per the instrument-specific repertoire sheet on the Conservatory audition-repertoire page

Repertoire/interview preparation: prepare two popular songs of your choice, in any genre, to sing a cappella during the music therapy faculty interview

Resume

Required: artistic resume or CV listing all relevant music experience (ensembles, schools, teachers, performances, awards)

Letters of Recommendation

Required: two letters of recommendation (must be received by Feb. 1)

Transcript

Required: official transcripts, high school and any college (must be received by UMKC Admissions by Feb. 1)

Scores / GPA

Optional when applicable: ACT/SAT scores

Good to Know

Application Logistics

Complete the online UMKC application and Conservatory application by Dec. 15, 2026

No application fee for domestic undergraduate students ($75 for international students)

Admitted students complete music theory and aural-skills placement testing at orientation — for course placement only, not admission

Applicants whose major instrument is piano or guitar typically fulfill ensemble requirements through UMKC Choral Union or UMKC Campus Band

What's The Process

Audition Process

Live, on-campus audition on your applied instrument or voice type is required (no prescreen)

Select one of three audition dates in the application: Feb. 6, Feb. 15, or March 5, 2027

Sight-reading may be requested

Arrive at least 30 minutes early to check in

An interview with the music therapy faculty is required and takes place on the day of your instrumental or voice audition

Be ready to sing two popular songs (any genre) a cappella during the interview

Audition Expectations

Virtual auditions are asynchronous and available by request (email Conservatory Admissions for approval)

Upload performance video(s)/audio to the portfolio section of the application status page by February 26, 2027

Full scholarship consideration may not be available for video auditions — on-campus audition is strongly advised
