Audition Requirements

Repertoire

•Audition on your principal instrument or voice

-Vocalists: two songs from standard art song literature (an aria may substitute one selection)

-Instrumentalists: prepared repertoire that demonstrates your technique on your instrument

-Percussionists: a solo, study, or etude on snare, one keyboard percussion instrument, or timpani

-Read or sing music on sight, demonstrating the ability to perform music previously not seen

Scales & Technique

•Percussionists: all major scales from memory on a keyboard percussion instrument (the committee selects which to hear) plus basic snare-drum rudiments

Eligibility

•A principal-instrument or voice performance audition is required for admission to the Bachelor of Music Education program

•Submit audition materials before the February and March dates for scholarship consideration

Certification

•Leads to K-12 music teaching certification upon completing program requirements and passing the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification

•Includes more than 600 hours of classroom fieldwork in local schools

Placement

•Admitted students complete music theory and aural-harmony coursework after enrollment — for course placement and progression, not admission

What's The Process

Audition Process

•Email musicumflint@umich.edu to register for an audition

•All auditions are held in person

•Audition appointments begin at 4 p.m.; specific appointment time provided upon registration

•Submitting before the February and March audition dates is highly recommended for music scholarship consideration

Accompaniment

•Vocalists are provided a staff accompanist when arranged in advance with the Department of Music, or may bring their own at their own expense

•Recorded or digital accompaniments are not acceptable
