Program Recognition
•The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre is UM-Flint's pre-professional theatre degree, structured for students preparing for a life in professional performance and production rather than academic study alone.
Training
•The General emphasis carries the full BFA course load across acting, movement, and production coursework without narrowing into the Musical Theatre or Performance emphases, giving students the broadest working knowledge of the stage before specializing after graduation.
•Associate Professor Stephanie Dean and Department Chair Shelby Newport, Professor of Theatre and Dance, lead the department's studio and production faculty.
Performance & Productions
•Students work alongside Flint Repertory Theatre professionals; the 2025-26 season paired the department with Flint Rep on a co-production of the musical "Lucky Stiff," led by Dean, and the company staged "Exit, Pursued by a Bear" in November 2024.
Value
•BFA students may audition for department scholarships each May in French Hall, drawing on named funds including the Carl and Sarah Morgan Theatre Fund, the Ralph M. and Emmalyn E. Freeman Theatre Scholarship, and the Kay Sampson Kelly Theatre Merit Scholarship Fund.
