Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire

Vocalists: two memorized songs from the standard classical vocal literature, one in English and one in a foreign language, plus an optional third selection in musical theater or another non-classical style

Instrumentalists: two solo pieces on your primary instrument plus one piece on each secondary instrument; percussionists prepare snare drum, mallets, and timpani (drumset and world percussion such as congas and steel pan are optional)

Scales & Technique

Instrumentalists: two-octave major scales and a full-range chromatic scale (string players are exempt from the chromatic scale)

Accompaniment

Vocalists: an accompanist is provided, or you may bring your own; bring original scores

Instrumentalists: an accompanist is not required

Video

Required for students submitting a video audition instead of an in-person audition

Combine all audition selections into one continuous video; selections may be recorded separately and edited together

Upload to YouTube using the Unlisted setting; do not use Private

Send the video link to music@umary.edu by February 20

Apply to the University of Mary, then schedule a music audition through the Music Department

Submit the music scholarship application online to be considered for music scholarships

Placement

Admitted music majors take music theory and keyboard skills assessment exams before the first semester — for course placement only, not admission, and they do not affect scholarship awards

In-person audition at a scheduled University of Mary event, or video audition for students more than 250 miles from campus

Audition on your principal instrument or voice using the standard Music Department repertoire and technique requirements

Audition Expectations

Demonstrate performance range, tone quality, technique, and musicianship that show promise of successful college-level study

Scholarship Info

Music Scholarships

Awards of $1,000 to $4,000 per year based on musical talent and potential contribution

Available to incoming freshman and transfer students

Open to music majors and ensemble participants (non-music majors)

Stackable with most academic awards

Renewable for up to four years
