Application Logistics

•Apply to UofL via Common App or school portal first — the audition registration form becomes available through the Application Gateway once an application is submitted

•University admission is not required before registering for an audition

•BME prepares students for initial P-12 music teacher certification in Kentucky (meets licensure/certification requirements in 45 other states)

•Admitted students take a music theory and aural-skills placement exam at orientation — for course placement only, not admission

What's The Process

Audition Process

•Submit a UofL undergraduate application first — an audition registration form then becomes available via your Application Gateway

•Saturday audition days for Fall 2026 entry have passed; alternative audition arrangements are available by emailing the School of Music admissions office

•Recorded/virtual auditions can be arranged when an on-campus visit is not possible

Audition Expectations

•Live principal-instrument or voice audition for the area faculty on campus

•Current UofL students changing majors into the School of Music contact admissions to schedule an audition

Teaching Interview

•Music Education applicants complete a performance audition on their principal instrument or voice plus a teaching-disposition interview with education faculty

•Tracks of emphasis: strings, vocal, keyboard, and brass/woodwinds/percussion

•Awarded based on audition performance

•Complete the application and audition by March 1 for music scholarship consideration
