•Prepared jazz blues: theme and improvisation (e.g., Blue Monk, Tenor Madness)
•Prepared jazz standard: theme and improvisation (e.g., Autumn Leaves, Just Friends)
•Prepared jazz ballad: theme and improvisation (e.g., Misty, Polka Dots and Moonbeams)
•Guitar, piano, and bass applicants should also prepare accompaniment; an optional solo ballad arrangement is welcome
•Drummers: demonstrate jazz ballad, medium swing, fast swing, jazz waltz, funk, samba, and bossa nova grooves; trade 4s and 8s; play five standards from memory; and improvise a drum solo
Scales & Technique
•Major scales (F, B-flat, E-flat, G, D, A) in two or three octaves as possible
•Chromatic scale (winds/brass to high F where applicable)
•Pianists: major and minor scales up to four sharps/flats, two hands through four octaves
•Guitarists should demonstrate scales and basic jazz chord technique (Freddie Green style)
Sight-Reading Repertoire
•Sight-read exercise: sight-read a melody in the jazz idiom; pianists also sight-read a chord chart
