Audition Requirements

Songs

Voice Applicants

Two contrasting selections demonstrating technique and expressive ability

One selection in English; one selection in a language other than English is encouraged

Songs must be memorized and selected from standard art song repertoire

Music therapy applicants may self-accompany on piano or guitar for a contemporary or music theater selection

Additional Materials

Resume (Required)

Attach a musical resume listing musical experiences and accomplishments

Repertoire

Strings: one unaccompanied movement plus a contrasting-style sonata or concerto movement

All other instruments: two short contrasting pieces or one extended work; may be asked to play major scales

Essay

Short essay (approximately 500 words) responding to "Why I chose music therapy as my major"

Sheet Music (Required for Voice Applicants)

Submit scores of audition music through the Acceptd media tab at least 10 days before the audition

Application Logistics

Apply for university admission first (Common App or UD Application)

Applications must be received at least two weeks before the chosen audition date

Applications after February 15, 2027 may be accepted, but scholarship may not be available

Audition Format

In-person and virtual auditions receive full and equitable consideration

What's The Process

Audition Day Format

Audition Day runs approximately 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM on campus

Short performance on your principal instrument or voice

Brief sight-singing and pitch-matching assessment (music majors)

A current UD student (Flyer Friend) guides you through the day

Interview

Interview with a music therapy faculty member

Be prepared to discuss previous volunteer experience with children or adults with disabilities, illnesses, or special needs

Assessment of functional music skills (e.g., guitar, piano)

Admission Requirements

Must be admitted to the university and accepted by the Department of Music

Departmental acceptance requires audition, interview, and essay

$2,500 per year for up to four years
