Audition Requirements

Resume (Required)

Attach a musical resume listing musical experiences and accomplishments

Repertoire

Strings: one unaccompanied movement plus a contrasting-style sonata or concerto movement (bass students may substitute three standard orchestral excerpts)

All other instruments: two short contrasting pieces or one extended work; a state solo and ensemble contest selection is acceptable; may be asked to play major scales

Essay

Short essay (approximately 500 words) responding to "Why I chose music education as my major"

Application Logistics

Apply for university admission first (Common App or UD Application)

Applications must be received at least two weeks before the chosen audition date

Applications after February 15, 2027 may be accepted, but scholarship may not be available

In-person and virtual auditions receive full and equitable consideration

What's The Process

Audition Day Format

Audition Day runs approximately 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM on campus

Short performance/musical skills demonstration in your chosen area

Brief sight-singing and pitch-matching assessment (music majors)

Meet faculty, attend sessions on degree programs, financial aid, and performance opportunities

A current UD student (Flyer Friend) guides you through the day

Interview

Interview with at least one faculty member in your chosen degree area

Covers previous music experience and career goals

Music education applicants discuss teaching interest and career goals as part of the degree-area interview

Admission Requirements

Must be admitted to the university and accepted by the Department of Music

Departmental acceptance requires audition, interview, and essay

Performing Arts Scholarship

$2,500 per year for up to four years

Renewable by remaining enrolled and participating in assigned ensembles
