Audition Requirements

Repertoire

•A prepared piece equivalent to the MSHSAA Prescribed Music List (PML) grade "A" selections — a solo, etude, or one movement of a sonata or concerto

•Memorization is not required for winds, brass, and strings

•Percussion: a snare drum solo and a two- or four-mallet keyboard solo (a third selection is encouraged)

•Piano principals: three memorized works from the standard classical literature

•Requirements are published per instrument area (Brass, Woodwinds, Strings, Percussion, Piano)

Scales & Technique

•Winds & Brass: chromatic scale (full practical range, memorized) and all major and melodic minor scales

•Strings: three- or four-octave major scales (keys vary by instrument), two-octave natural, harmonic, and melodic minor scales in A and E, and a two-octave chromatic scale

•Percussion: chromatic, all major, and all melodic minor scales

Sight-Reading

•A sight-reading exercise is part of the audition for all instrumental areas (percussion covers keyboard and snare drum)

Accompaniment

•A staff accompanist can be provided if requested in advance; bring clearly printed music

•Apply for admission to UCM first

•Complete the UCM Music Admission Form (no additional fee)

•Complete the UCM Scholarship Finder for maximum scholarship eligibility

Music Theory Placement

•A music theory placement assessment is administered at audition time for course placement only — it does not affect admission

•Determines placement in Fundamentals of Music or Music Theory I

•Not required if you plan to begin in Fundamentals of Music (offered every semester)

What's The Process

•Live instrumental performance of prepared repertoire, scales, and sight-reading

•In-person, video, and Zoom auditions are welcome

•Detailed requirements are published per instrument area on the Application, Scholarships, and Auditions page
