Scholarship Audition and Portfolio Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Optional audition and portfolio for scholarship consideration only; they are not required for program admission.

Monologues

One Monologue, 1 Min Max (Performance Focus)

Select a dramatic, comedic, or Shakespearean monologue

Must be from a published play (not film, TV, or online monologue sites)

Must be memorized

Read the full play to make informed character choices

Select material within your age range that you connect with personally

A chair will be provided if needed; hand props are discouraged

Optional Song

May prepare 16 bars of a song in addition to the monologue

May sing a cappella or provide your own recorded music and device

Additional Materials

Portfolio

For design, technical, or stage management focus applicants

Bring portfolio with text, illustrations, and/or images showing your process from start to finish

Include tools you enjoy working with

Be selective and include examples that provide context to your work

May bring physical examples of your work

Be prepared to discuss your strengths and what sets you apart

What's The Process

Scholarship Audition

Required for entering freshmen and transfer students seeking UCA Theatre Scholarship

Not required for admission to the BA Theatre program

Schedule a campus visit to audition/present with Joshua Gibby (gibbyj@uca.edu)

Also available at the Arkansas Thespian Festival

Format

Performance focus: 1-minute monologue

Design/technical/stage management focus: portfolio presentation

Auditions should be completed two weeks prior to the scholarship application deadline

Evaluation

Scored on preparation, material selection, material presentation, and personal presentation

Dress comfortably and professionally; avoid prints, bold patterns, and distracting accessories

Departmental Scholarships

UCA Theatre awards $15,000 in scholarships and over $25,000 in work-study positions annually

Scholarships vary in amount based on leadership potential in performance, technical, or production roles

Available to all Theatre majors and minors continuing in the program

Awarded on a semester basis; students must reapply each semester

Recipients are required to contribute to the Theatre Program

James Bridges Performing Arts Scholarship

Supports outstanding student-artists in Acting, Directing, or Dramatic Writing for stage, film, or TV

Open to Film, Theatre, and Creative Writing students

Applications taken in Spring for the following academic year
