UAA describes the Performance Emphasis as a professional degree aimed at high technical competence and the concepts and sensitivities necessary for a performing career; the brass plan therefore places the primary instrument and ensemble work at its center.

Repertoire List

At least 2 contrasting solos demonstrating your proficiency on your brass instrument

A single solo with contrasting movements satisfies the contrast requirement

Application Logistics

Apply via UAA online application portal

Application is free ($25 late fee for submissions after the deadline)

Program Requirements

Music theory placement exam taken before enrolling in Music Theory I — for course placement only, not admission

Piano Proficiency exam must be passed before completing 60 credits

Each semester: perform in student recitals, stand for jury finals, and provide technical support at department concerts

What's The Process

Audition Expectations

All incoming first-year and transfer students must complete an audition/performance evaluation prior to their first semester

Prepare at least 2 contrasting solos that display your proficiency on your brass instrument

No specific style or period is required

Auditions may be conducted in person or by video (live or recorded)

Faculty assess readiness for juried private lessons, ensembles, and academic music classes

Students not ready for juried lessons begin with non-juried private lessons to build performance skills

Auditions are scheduled as needed; sign up via the Music Department audition form
