Audition Requirements

Repertoire List

Voice repertoire: perform two songs from memory; an accompanist is provided upon request and recorded accompaniment is not allowed; the first song is free choice; the second is an aria appropriate for the voice from an oratorio or opera, or a standard art song (e.g., from 24/26/28 Italian Songs and Arias or the First/Second Book of Solos series)

Instrumental repertoire: perform two movements from solos or etudes of contrasting styles and tempos that feature technique, range, musical control, and dynamic range; various major scales and sight-reading are expected; memorization is not required

Piano repertoire: perform two selections of standard piano literature from memory representing two different periods or styles; play all major scales, four octaves

Theory placement test and a keyboard evaluation for non-keyboard majors are given after admission for course placement only

Admission Pathway

Rolling admissions with no strict deadline

Scholarship Priority

Audition before April 1 for first scholarship consideration; scholarship awarding begins April 1

Transfer Pathway

BM Music with Studies in Selected Area transfer applicants complete the department application and audition. Applicants with 8 or more hours of principal applied study take MUS 250 and a first-semester Sophomore Review to determine applied-study credit and future placement.

Audition Expectations

Audition on the principal applied area required for program admission and scholarship consideration

In-person on campus at designated dates, or video submission for students 200+ miles away

Evaluates talent, musicianship potential, academic success, and sense of calling

Record via phone, tablet, or computer and upload to YouTube or Vimeo

Email video link to music@uu.edu

No editing or production effects allowed

Performance attire recommended

Begin with personal introduction: name, location, degree program, musical experience, calling, and reason for applying

After Audition

Video applicants have a Zoom interview with faculty

All students take an online theory placement test

Keyboard evaluation given separately for non-keyboard majors

Scheduling & Accompaniment

All audition times must be scheduled at least two weeks before the audition date

In-person auditions receive higher scholarship consideration than video auditions

Applicants may bring an accompanist or request Union's free pianist

To request Union's pianist, email clean, full-page PDF sheet music at least two weeks before the audition

Maintain 2.0 GPA and earn B or higher in applied lessons
