These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Songs

Two Memorized Selections

•One Italian aria, preferably from the 24 Italian Songs and Arias of the 17th and 18th Century anthology

•One English art song

Additional Skills

•Be prepared to demonstrate major scale singing (major keys only)

•Sight-reading ability assessment

•Respond to 3-4 note vocal patterns when requested

Program Accreditation

•All UNH music degrees have final approval from the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM)

•A music audition identifies your qualifications; it does not by itself commit you to a music degree

Five-Year Pathway

•The BM pre-teaching degree is designed for a combined five-year bachelor’s and Master of Arts in Teaching (Secondary Education) leading to public-school music certification

•Application to the MAT program requires a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.2 or better

•Students elect a vocal/choral or instrumental concentration

•Admitted students complete music theory and aural-skills placement for course placement only — not part of admission

Audition Expectations

•Auditions are held before a small panel of faculty members

•All auditions are video recorded for the applied faculty member in your area to review

•Applicants traveling from outside New England or the Tri-State area may contact music.info@unh.edu if the in-person requirement is an undue burden

Teaching Pathway

•Pre-teaching applicants complete the principal-instrument audition on a scheduled date

•Most students first apply as a BM music education major and switch to the pre-teaching degree in their junior or senior year

Scholarship Info

Music Merit Scholarships

•The music department audition also serves as the audition for a music merit scholarship

•Awards are based largely on audition quality, plus the applicant’s instrument/voice type and departmental needs

•Renewable for up to four academic years with an acceptable GPA

Recording Policy

•All auditions are video recorded for review by the applied faculty member in your area

•Students who opt out of recording are ineligible for a scholarship unless they schedule an in-person campus visit and sample lesson
