Audition Requirements

Repertoire

Trumpet: two pieces of contrasting style — one lyrical (for example, the 2nd movement of the Haydn trumpet concerto) and one more technical; contrasting sections of an extended piece are acceptable

French horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba: prepare two contrasting pieces (or movements)

Scales & Technique

Demonstrate proficiency with major scales

Trumpet: also be prepared to play a chromatic scale

Program Requirements

Degree program has final approval from the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM)

Admitted students complete music theory and aural-skills placement for course placement only — not part of admission

Audition Expectations

Auditions are held before a small panel of faculty members

All auditions are video recorded for the applied faculty member in your area to review

Applicants traveling from outside New England or the Tri-State area may contact music.info@unh.edu if the in-person requirement is an undue burden

Scholarship Info

Music Merit Scholarships

The music department audition also serves as the audition for a music merit scholarship

Awards are based largely on audition quality, plus the applicant’s instrument/voice type and departmental needs

Renewable for up to four academic years with an acceptable GPA

Recording Policy

All auditions are video recorded for review by the applied faculty member in your area

Students who opt out of recording are ineligible for a scholarship unless they schedule an in-person campus visit and sample lesson
